Belgium Coach Criticizes FIFA's Decision on Balogun Ahead of World Cup Clash

Belgium's head coach Rudi Garcia has voiced strong criticism of FIFA's decision to allow Folarin Balogun to play in the World Cup 2026 Round of 16. He likened the ruling to an April Fool's joke, questioning its impact on the integrity of football. Despite the controversy, Garcia insists it won't distract the team from their preparations for the match against the USA. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also emphasized the team's focus on winning, regardless of the off-field discussions surrounding Balogun's eligibility. The match promises to be a pivotal moment in the tournament.

Garcia's Outrage Over FIFA's Ruling

Seattle [US], July 6: Rudi Garcia, the head coach of Belgium, has expressed strong disapproval regarding FIFA's recent decision to allow United States striker Folarin Balogun to participate in the upcoming Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He described the ruling as akin to an April Fool's prank, raising concerns about the sport's integrity.

In a press conference prior to the crucial knockout match, Garcia criticized FIFA for its unusual choice to lift Balogun's automatic one-match suspension, which was imposed after he received a red card during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I wasn't aware that July 5th at the FIFA World Cup is now celebrated as April 1st, the day for pranks," Garcia remarked to the media.

He also referenced a statement from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), which expressed its astonishment at FIFA's decision and mentioned that it was exploring all possible options.

Garcia emphasized that their stance is not merely about defending the national team or the federation but about upholding the ethics and integrity of football.

Despite his discontent with the ruling, Garcia assured that the controversy would not derail Belgium's focus as they prepare for the match. However, he grew increasingly irritated by repeated inquiries on the topic.

"Please refrain from wasting time discussing that. Our focus is on sporting matters," he stated.

Belgium's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, acknowledged the unexpected nature of FIFA's decision but reiterated that the players are concentrating solely on the game.

"For us as players, nothing changes. Our focus is on winning on the pitch, regardless of who plays," Courtois commented.

FIFA announced on Sunday that Balogun would be eligible to play for the United States after suspending the enforcement of his automatic one-match ban.

According to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, "By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year."

Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute during the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. The 25-year-old forward has netted three goals in the tournament and is anticipated to start against Belgium.

The decision was positively received by United States President Donald Trump, who expressed gratitude to FIFA on Truth Social, stating, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President Donald J. Trump."

In addition to the disciplinary issues, Courtois reflected on Belgium's evolution following the era of their celebrated "golden generation."

"I believe this marks a new chapter for us," he noted. "While some players from the golden era remain, the reality is that our World Cup experience in Qatar (2022) was disappointing; we were eliminated in the group stage. Now, we have a new generation eager to achieve greatness and make history for Belgium."

Belgium and the United States are set to clash on Monday (Local Time), with a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals on the line. However, FIFA's decision to overturn Balogun's suspension has already sparked significant discussion off the field.
