Overview of the Upcoming Domestic Season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the Ranji Trophy will be conducted in two phases, commencing with the first round on October 11. The domestic season for 2026-27 will kick off with the Duleep Trophy, starting on August 23. In total, the BCCI plans to oversee 1,788 matches across various age groups and senior categories, including U-16, U-19, U-23, and senior levels for both men and women.

In response to evolving demands, the U-23 white ball tournament and the Inter-zonal University meet for the Vizzy Trophy will now adopt a T20 format. The BCCI emphasized that the 2026-27 domestic season showcases its dedication to fostering a robust and competitive domestic cricket framework while ensuring a balanced development across different formats and categories.

The Duleep Trophy will return to its zonal format, taking place from August 23 to September 10, with all matches hosted at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Additionally, the Irani Cup, featuring the Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir against the Rest of India, is scheduled for October 1 to 5 in Srinagar.

The prestigious Ranji Trophy will see its first phase from October 11 to November 5, comprising four rounds. The second phase is set for January 17 to March 3, 2027, following the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (National T20s) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (National 50-over tournament). The SMAT will take place from November 14 to December 6, with league matches held in Mumbai, Mohali, Vizag, and Kolkata, while the knockout stage will occur in Nagpur.

This scheduling allows talent scouts ample time to compile their lists ahead of the IPL auction, which is expected to occur in December. The Vijay Hazare Trophy is slated for December 14, 2026, to January 8, 2027. A notable scheduling improvement by the BCCI is the timing of the Vijay Merchant Trophy (U-16), which will run from November to January, facilitating better preparation for players and accommodating school cricket schedules, particularly with annual exams typically held in February and March.
