Key Discussions Ahead of New Zealand Tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a crucial review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, focusing on the injury management of essential players as the team prepares for an important all-format tour of New Zealand. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar will lead the discussions, which will also touch upon the strategic roadmap for the upcoming ODI World Cup next year.

The aftermath of the disappointing June-July tour in the UK is expected to be a significant topic, but there is a strong desire among stakeholders, including BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, to shift focus towards future plans.

VVS Laxman, head of the Centre of Excellence, is also anticipated to participate in the meeting, with the New Zealand tour scheduled for October-November.

Injury Updates and Player Availability

Sources close to Indian cricket indicate that Agarkar and Gambhir will likely seek detailed updates on the rehabilitation of injured players currently undergoing treatment at the Bengaluru-based Centre of Excellence (COE).

Before the Sri Lanka Tests, the selection committee chief was informally informed that Jasprit Bumrah might be fit for at least one or two Tests, prompting him to request further clarification regarding Bumrah's absence.

Bumrah's lack of presence was notably felt during the second Test, where Siraj struggled on a favorable pitch. Similarly, Hardik Pandya, who has not played since the IPL, is crucial for the ODI World Cup, according to a BCCI insider.

While predicting a return date for injured players is challenging due to varying recovery rates and injury types, the COE's Sports Science team has sometimes struggled to provide even rough timelines.

Strategic Planning for Major Tours

Understanding the availability of key players is vital for Agarkar and Gambhir as they strategize for significant tours and major ICC events. For instance, Pandya has relocated to Bengaluru, renting a house to facilitate his training.

However, the team management and selection committee have made it clear that Pandya will not be considered for 50-over matches unless the COE deems him fit to bowl ten overs.

Pandya was not in contention for the Afghanistan match as he is not part of the Asian Games squad.

Pacer Akash Deep has been at the COE for several months without playing any international matches, raising questions about his readiness for the New Zealand A series before the Test matches.

Injury Protocols and Player Fitness

The selection committee has included four injured players—Bumrah, Washington, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana—in the squad for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, contingent on their fitness.

All four are currently adhering to the 'Return To Play' protocols, placing the responsibility on the Laxman-led COE to ensure these players are match-ready.

The COE faces the challenge of getting these injured athletes back on the field, ensuring they can complete match simulations, which is the final step before declaring a player fit.

There have been cases where players, despite passing fitness tests and following protocols, were found to be overweight upon joining the England tour.

The meeting will also address the future of veteran players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja as they approach the ODI World Cup. While Kohli and Jadeja are not under significant pressure, Rohit has faced scrutiny.

It has been rumored that a selection committee member informed Rohit that the panel is considering moving on from him, asking if he would retire after the Lord's ODI during the recent England tour.

Despite maintaining silence on the matter, there are indications that Rohit, although upset, may have agreed to this suggestion.

However, following his impressive century at Lord's, albeit in a losing effort, the prospect of his retirement seems to have been postponed for now. Still, it remains uncertain whether Rohit will be part of the team heading to South Africa next year.

Agarkar's Contract and Future

Ajit Agarkar's current contract is set to expire on October 4, but his presence at the review meeting suggests that the BCCI may be interested in maintaining continuity through the ODI World Cup.

In an effort to ensure operational harmony across various divisions, the BCCI aims for the Gambhir-Agarkar-Laxman trio to remain aligned in their objectives.
