In a recent IPL 2026 match, Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh by the BCCI due to his team's slow over-rate. The Punjab Kings secured a thrilling victory over the Gujarat Titans, but Iyer's performance and the subsequent penalty have raised eyebrows. This fine marks a shift in the BCCI's approach to managing over-rate offenses, moving away from suspensions to a demerit point system. Discover the full details of the match and the implications of this fine.

Shreyas Iyer Fined by BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has levied a fine of ₹12 lakh on Shreyas Iyer following the Punjab Kings' (PBKS) win against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their opening match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on March 31. The match concluded with PBKS triumphing by three wickets, with five balls remaining. Debutant Cooper Connolly was named Player of the Match for his impressive innings of 72 runs off just 44 balls.

Shreyas Iyer, returning to T20 cricket after the 2025 IPL final, scored only 18 runs from 11 balls. Despite his early dismissal, his team secured the victory, although it led to a batting collapse where they lost four wickets for just eight runs.

Reason Behind BCCI's Fine

The IPL governing council announced the financial penalty for Iyer the day after the match due to the slow over-rate maintained by his team. According to the league's statement, "Punjab Kings (PBKS) Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 4 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh. As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakhs."

Unlike in previous seasons, Iyer will not face a ban for repeated offenses, as the BCCI has updated its guidelines to include demerit points, aligning with the ICC's code of conduct. Previously, captains faced a one-match suspension after three over-rate violations in a season. In the 2024 season, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya were suspended for similar infractions.
