Bangladesh Cricket Board Raises Alarm Over Government Investigation into Election
BCB Voices Concerns Over Government Inquiry
Dhaka [Bangladesh], March 17: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed its apprehension regarding the government's recent decision to launch an investigation into the upcoming October 2025 elections. The board fears that this action may jeopardize the stability and autonomy of its administration.
In an official statement, the BCB highlighted that this initiative follows a gazette issued by the National Sports Council, which outlines the establishment of an inquiry committee to scrutinize the electoral process.
The board asserted that its current administration is a "legitimately elected and fully functional entity" operating according to its constitutional and governance guidelines. Since assuming office, the BCB has been dedicated to fulfilling its duties in the best interests of cricket in Bangladesh.
However, the BCB raised "serious concerns" regarding the gazette, as it could lead to uncertainty about the stability, independence, and continuity of the elected body.
Additionally, the board reminded that it functions within the global governance framework of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and cautioned that any perceived external interference in the operations of an elected cricket body could attract scrutiny under the ICC's governance and compliance regulations.
The statement mentioned that preliminary discussions have already taken place with senior ICC officials, who indicated that actions viewed as interference in a democratically elected cricket board could raise governance issues in the international cricket arena.
Despite these concerns, the BCB plans to first engage with the National Sports Council to clarify the context, intent, and potential ramifications of the gazette before pursuing any formal actions with the ICC.
Emphasizing its readiness for constructive dialogue, the board reiterated the importance of maintaining the governance autonomy of the elected administration in accordance with globally recognized cricket governance standards.
Furthermore, the BCB called on the National Sports Council to address the matter in a way that ensures the stability and independence of Bangladesh cricket while upholding the country's reputation within the international cricket community.
