Baldev Singh Honored with Padma Shri for Contributions to Indian Hockey
Recognition for a Hockey Legend
Renowned hockey coach Baldev Singh has been awarded the esteemed Padma Shri, acknowledging his significant impact on Indian hockey. The honor was presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.
Singh is celebrated as a key figure in the development of women's hockey in India. He played a pivotal role in transforming Shahbad Markanda in Haryana into a hub for hockey talent, nurturing over 80 international players and eight Indian captains throughout his career.
Previously, he received the Dronacharya Award, highlighting his exceptional coaching achievements.
In a recent phone interview, Baldev Singh emphasized the necessity for a strategic and effective plan to restore hockey's former glory in Punjab. He pointed out that grassroots initiatives are essential for the sport to regain its historical prominence, advocating for systematic efforts at the school and village levels.
Singh remarked that Punjab, once a dominant force in Indian hockey and a breeding ground for Olympians and international athletes, requires a focused policy to rejuvenate the game. He recommended that the state adopt Haryana's successful sports framework, which has flourished due to robust government backing, infrastructure enhancements, and player incentives.
He firmly believes that with strategic planning, modern facilities, skilled coaches, and support for emerging talent, Punjab can once again assert its leadership in Indian hockey.
