Babar Azam Discusses Team Selection Dynamics Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Series
Babar Azam's Insights on Team Selection
Rawalpindi [Pakistan], November 9: Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan Test team, has clarified that he does not have the ultimate authority over team selection. He emphasized that the selectors and coaching staff are responsible for finalizing the squad, while his role is to maximize the potential of the chosen players as they prepare for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, as reported by a sports news outlet.
Currently positioned last in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027 standings, Pakistan is set to compete against Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series, with the first match commencing on November 9 in Rawalpindi, followed by the second Test starting on November 17 in Lahore.
In anticipation of the series opener, Babar Azam stated that he does not control team selection. He mentioned that while he offers his insights, the final decisions rest with the selectors and coaches. His primary responsibility is to extract the best performances from the 15 players selected.
“My job is to get the best out of the 15 players I have. The decision to select or drop players is not mine. The selectors and coaches have assembled the team, and my role is to guide them towards match-winning performances. I cannot publicly disclose the specifics of my role, but I will always communicate openly about my responsibilities within the team. I provide my input, and then the selectors and coaches execute their duties,” he remarked before the match, as cited by a sports news outlet.
His comments follow recent last-minute adjustments to the squad for the Sri Lanka series. Just under 48 hours before the first Test, Abdullah Fazal and Ali Usman were dropped, and four new players were introduced, three of whom are yet to make their Test debuts.
This marks the second instance of squad reshuffling for Pakistan in two Tests, as they previously sent home seven players and brought in replacements ahead of the third Test against England, which also saw changes in coaching staff.
Babar highlighted the team's focus on nurturing young talent while balancing it with experienced players, aiming to provide emerging players with opportunities to contribute and elevate the team's performance.
“Our squad is relatively young. We are striving to create a better mix of seasoned players and newcomers. We will give young talents the chance to showcase their skills and help advance our team,” he stated.
Addressing his recent struggles with form, Babar mentioned that he is collaborating with coaches to enhance his performance and does not believe that taking a break from cricket would be beneficial.
“I am in discussions with coaches about areas for improvement. We are actively working on it. I maintain a positive outlook. As a senior player, I aim to perform at my best. While opinions may vary, taking a break won’t aid my improvement. I strive to enhance my game continuously. If I underperform, I analyze my mistakes. Perfection is unattainable, but I can keep striving for improvement. I believe that the more I play, the better I will become. Each day presents new challenges, and I prepare diligently in training and on the field. Hard work is essential, and I trust that results will follow,” he concluded.
