Ayush Shetty Faces Tough Loss in Pre-Quarterfinals

In New Delhi, Ayush Shetty's aspirations at the BWF World Championships were dashed as he faced a defeat against Indonesia's Alwi Farhan in the men's singles Round of 16. The match, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, concluded with scores of 19-21, 11-21, marking the end of Ayush's impressive run.

Alwi, who is ranked World No. 22, acknowledged the added pressure of competing on home turf, stating, "Playing at home brings its own set of pressures. I understand this feeling as I experience it in Indonesia too."

The two players share a long history, having known each other since their junior days. Alwi reflected on their relationship, saying, "We have a good rapport, but once we step onto the court, we are opponents, and we both strive to represent our countries to the best of our abilities."

Ayush's defeat was particularly disheartening, especially after his stunning victory over World No. 1 Shi Yuqi in the previous round, positioning him as a key contender in the tournament.

The match began with Ayush showing promise, rallying from a 14-18 deficit to lead 19-18 in the first game. However, he couldn't maintain the momentum, allowing Alwi to clinch the game with three consecutive points.

In the second game, Alwi dominated, leveraging his speed and tactical shots to secure a decisive 21-11 victory.

Reflecting on his performance, Ayush admitted, "I had my chances in the first game but couldn't convert them. Alwi played with greater confidence and precision, which made a significant difference."

He praised Alwi's skills, noting, "He’s a formidable opponent, quick and aggressive at the net, which made it challenging for me. I also made some unforced errors that contributed to my loss. His variations in play are among the best in men's singles right now."

This match continued their rivalry, which began in junior competitions, where Alwi had previously defeated Ayush in the semifinals of the 2023 BWF World Junior Championships.

Looking ahead, Ayush is now focused on the upcoming Asian Games in 2026. He mentioned that preparations for both the World Championships and the Asian Games have been ongoing, stating, "We are ready for both events. There are tactical adjustments to be made, and I aim to learn from this experience as I shift my focus to the Asian Games."

With Ayush's exit, India's men's singles campaign at the World Championships has concluded, following Lakshya Sen's earlier loss to World No. 92 Garret Tan from the USA in the Round of 32.
