Ayush Shetty's Remarkable Upset
New Delhi, August 17: Coach Sagar Chopda has lauded Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty for his impressive performance against Shi Yu Qi, the reigning World No. 1, during the Round of 64 at the BWF World Championships 2026 held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
Shetty showcased remarkable composure, ultimately defeating Shi Yu Qi with a scoreline of 21-14, 13-21, 21-19. In a tense final game, he executed a brilliant winner that secured his victory, even as Shi fought back and saved four match points.
According to a statement from the Badminton Association of India (BAI), Ayush's decisive net flick was a game-changer, as he feigned a shot to Shi's forehand before redirecting it, leading to a stunning upset.
"I am thrilled with how Ayush executed that final shot. It truly reflects his talent," stated coach Sagar Chopda. He emphasized that Ayush has consistently excelled at that particular shot throughout the match.
Chopda noted that Ayush's ability to maintain his composure was crucial, especially against a player like Shi, who was quick to capitalize on any mistakes. He mentioned that Ayush's tactical approach, including his effective use of net shots and patience in not rushing his smashes, played a significant role in his success.
Having trained with Indonesian coach Irwansyah, Ayush entered the match with a calm demeanor, leading from the very first point. Chopda remarked on Ayush's strategic play, mixing clears and lifts to open up the court effectively.
Chopda rated this victory as Ayush's best to date and highlighted the importance of recovery and focus on the upcoming rounds, as the competition is far from over.
