Axar Patel Achieves Historic Milestone in ODI Against England
Axar Patel's Record-Breaking Performance
In a remarkable display of skill, Axar Patel made history by leading India to a six-wicket victory over England in the first ODI of a three-match series held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. The 32-year-old all-rounder rebounded from a challenging phase in his career, securing India's first win on their UK tour after previously losing both T20 matches in Ireland and suffering a 4-0 defeat in a five-match T20 series against England.
Axar excelled as the standout bowler for India, claiming 4 wickets for 62 runs, dismissing key players including Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Josh Tongue, which led to England being bowled out for 258 runs. Coming in to bat at number seven, he played a crucial role after Shubman Gill had to retire hurt, and both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul fell quickly.
Historic Achievement in ODI Cricket
Axar Patel Creates History
Axar Patel has become only the third player in ODI history, and the second spinner, to achieve the remarkable feat of taking four wickets while also scoring a half-century in an ODI match against England. He joins the ranks of Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya and New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra in this exclusive club. Notably, Axar has surpassed Hardik's record, becoming the oldest player to accomplish this feat at over 30 years of age.

A Rare Achievement in ODI History
Axar Patel Becomes Oldest Player In 43 Years To Rare Feat
Overall, Axar is the 10th player in the history of ODIs played in England to achieve this rare double in 512 matches over 54 years. He is the second oldest to do so, following former Indian coach Duncan Fletcher, who accomplished this during the 1983 Cricket World Cup while playing for Zimbabwe against Australia. Remarkably, this achievement has only been accomplished three times by players from the home team, with Paul Collingwood achieving it twice and Ronni Irani once. The only other players to have achieved a fifty and five-wicket haul in an ODI in England are Ronni Irani against India in 2002 and Shakib Al Hasan against Afghanistan in 2021.
Furthermore, Axar ranks as the third-oldest player to complete this rare double against England in an ODI, following Aravinda de Silva and Shakib Al Hasan.
