Australia's Provisional Squad for T20 World Cup 2026

On January 1, Cricket Australia revealed a provisional squad rich in spin options for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, set to take place in Sri Lanka and India. Veteran all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been appointed as the captain of the 15-member team.

Notable players such as Pat Cummins, Cameron Green, and Cooper Connolly, who were absent from the recent T20I series against India, have made their way back into the provisional lineup.

The reigning champions have opted for a squad heavily featuring spin bowlers, with leg-spinner Adam Zampa spearheading the attack alongside Matthew Kuhnemann, Cooper Connolly, and all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short.

George Bailey, the chair of selectors, mentioned that the selection panel had the advantage of choosing players who are likely to adapt well to the playing conditions in India and Sri Lanka. However, some players are currently facing fitness concerns.

Bailey stated, “The T20 team has enjoyed a successful run recently, allowing us to select a balanced group suited for the diverse conditions we may encounter in Sri Lanka and India,” as reported by ICC.

He added, “Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Tim David are progressing well, and we are optimistic about their availability for the World Cup.”

As this is a preliminary squad, adjustments may be made before the support period if necessary.

Interestingly, Australia has not included a left-arm seamer in the squad. Following Mitchell Starc's retirement from T20Is and Spencer Johnson's injury, right-armer Xavier Bartlett has been selected instead of Ben Dwarshuis.

Australia finds itself in Group B, competing against Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman. Their first match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will be against Ireland in Colombo on February 11, followed by a game against Zimbabwe on February 13, and a clash with the hosts, Sri Lanka, on February 16. They will conclude the group stage with a match against Oman on February 20.

Australia's squad includes: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa.
