Enhancing Sports Collaboration Between Australia and India

In New Delhi, Australian High Commissioner Philip Green emphasized the increasing partnership in sports between Australia and India, particularly in light of the upcoming 2032 Olympics and India's aspirations to host significant events like the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympics in the future.

Green pointed out that Australian companies are already engaged in various projects in Ahmedabad, and both countries are keen to enhance their collaboration in the sports sector.

India has officially submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games to the Evaluation Committee of Commonwealth Sport based in London.

Additionally, India has expressed its intention to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), under President Usha, having sent a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in October 2024.

Green made these remarks during the FICCI TURF 2025 – the 15th Global Summit on the Business of Sports.

He stated, "Australia is set to host the Olympic Games, and it is highly likely that India will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, with potential for future Olympic hosting. The Brisbane Olympics in 2032 will present numerous opportunities for collaboration in sports. The sports industry is booming, and I am thrilled to discuss the business of sports at FICCI today, as there is significant potential for cooperation between Australian and Indian sports. We are committed to supporting India as it emerges as a leader in sports development. Several Australian firms are already engaged in projects in Ahmedabad, and there are broader opportunities in sports medicine and science. Australia can be an excellent partner for India on its sports journey," Green remarked.

The upcoming Los Angeles Olympics is scheduled to commence with an opening ceremony on July 14 and will conclude with a closing ceremony on July 30, featuring 51 sports across 49 competitions in 18 zones, including Los Angeles and Oklahoma City.

In a related note, Jayawant Gundu, secretary of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), expressed appreciation to the Australian government and the High Commission for their support of the Indian sports ecosystem, particularly in para-sports, through various recent initiatives.

Gundu spoke at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, where Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met with Indian para-athletes and announced new sports initiatives aimed at strengthening the Australia-India relationship.

During his address, Gundu stated, "It is a privilege to welcome you on this significant occasion, celebrating the robust connection between Australia and India in sports. We sincerely thank the Australian Government and the High Commission for their support to the Paralympic Committee of India and other sports federations through programs like the Direct Aid Programme and the Australian Sports Award."
