Australia Makes Key Change Ahead of Final Test

Melbourne [Australia], August 18: In a strategic move, Australia has altered their lineup for the concluding ICC World Test Championship match against Bangladesh in Mackay, opting to drop opener Jake Weatherald due to ongoing performance issues.

Weatherald struggled significantly, managing only 23 runs in one innings and failing to score in another, despite his attempts to adjust his batting technique. He has been replaced by left-handed batsman Matthew Renshaw. Currently, Australia trails 1-0 in the series following a disappointing nine-wicket defeat in Darwin, raising concerns about their batting lineup.

Since making his international debut during last year's home Ashes series, Weatherald has accumulated just 224 runs across six Tests, averaging 20.36, with only one half-century to his credit.

Coach Andrew McDonald commented on Weatherald's situation, stating, "There were some adjustments in Jake's alignment and movement patterns. It's challenging to evaluate small sample sizes at the international level. He faced difficulties in both innings, making it hard to determine if his changes would withstand pressure. However, some modifications were evident."

Another potential option for the opening position is Josh Inglis, who typically bats in the middle order during Sheffield Shield matches. He made a case for a top-order role with scores of 40 and an unbeaten 125 against England Lions last November.

Renshaw, a more traditional choice, has previously scored two first-class centuries at the Mackay venue, which is hosting its inaugural Test. The 30-year-old last played a Test match against India three years ago and has participated in 14 Tests, amassing 645 runs in 24 innings, including one century and three fifties, with an average of 29.31. He has also been a reliable performer in the Sheffield Shield, scoring 499 runs in 10 innings at an average close to 50, featuring three centuries and one fifty.

Australia's squad includes: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Beau Webster.
