Glasgow [Scotland], July 31: Indian judoka Asmita Dey celebrated a significant achievement by winning the gold medal in the women's 48kg judo category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. This victory marks India's first judo gold at the event.
Asmita secured her win with a Yuko score of 2-1, showcasing her skill and determination throughout the match. After her victory, she expressed her joy and dedicated the medal to her coach, her country, the police department, and her home state. She also paid tribute to her late father, whose unwavering support was instrumental in her journey. Asmita shared that she found renewed confidence after excelling in the national-level Asian Games trials, just two months following her father's passing.
"Winning this gold medal in my first Commonwealth Games feels incredible. It holds great significance for my country, my police department, and my state. I dedicate this achievement to my coach and my father, who passed away in December 2025. His support meant everything to me, and I thought my journey was over after his death. However, I managed to come back strong in the Asian Games trials," Asmita remarked.
The final match was fiercely contested, with both competitors engaged in intense grappling. Quach took an early lead with a throw, but Asmita quickly responded with a throw of her own, leveling the score despite receiving a Shido penalty. As the match progressed, Asmita's confidence grew, leading her to launch several attacks while effectively defending against Quach's efforts to regain control, as noted by ESPN.
With the score tied at the end of regulation, the match moved into Golden Score, where the first point scored would determine the winner. Asmita maintained her composure during this tense period and executed a perfectly timed throw near the mat's edge, clinching the decisive Yuko and securing the gold medal.
India's judo success continued as Harsh Singh followed Asmita's lead by winning the men's 60kg gold medal, defeating Australia's Joshua Katz with a Waza-Ari score of 10-0 in the final. This victory brought India's total judo gold medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 to two and contributed to the country's overall medal tally of 19, which includes five gold, nine silver, and five bronze medals.
India's gold medalists at the Games include Mirabai Chanu (women's 48kg weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (women's shot put F57), Dilip Gavit (men's 100m T47), Asmita Dey (women's 48kg judo), and Harsh Singh (men's 60kg judo). The silver medals were earned by Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Harjinder Kaur, Gulveer Singh, Murali Sreeshankar, Mohammed Basil, and Lovepreet Singh, while bronze medals were secured by Jhandu Kumar, Bindyarani Devi, Shilpa K Shyla, and Seema Kaliramna.
