Auckland, Oct 30: Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has made a significant mark in T20I cricket by becoming the first Indian to take 150 wickets in this format during the fourth match against New Zealand at Eden Park on Friday.
Arshdeep reached this remarkable milestone by dismissing New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner in the 19th over of the first innings. He bowled a fuller delivery outside off, which Santner hit straight to sweeper cover, departing for just five runs.
With this achievement, Arshdeep is now the ninth player globally to reach 150 wickets in T20I cricket. He also holds the record for the fastest bowler to achieve this milestone in terms of days since his debut. Having debuted in November 2022, he reached 150 wickets in just 1577 days, according to Cricbuzz.
The previous record for the fastest to 150 wickets was held by Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga, who took 2325 days to reach the same mark.
In terms of balls bowled, Arshdeep is the third-fastest overall and the quickest among pace bowlers to reach 150 wickets, achieving this in 2143 balls. He trails only Hasaranga (2035 balls) and Rashid Khan (2098 balls). The previous record for a fast bowler was held by Mustafizur Rahman, who took 150 wickets in 2532 deliveries.
Additionally, Arshdeep set a new record for the most wickets taken in a T20I calendar year by players from full-member nations. His wicket of Santner marked his 40th of the year, surpassing Josh Little's record of 39 wickets in 2022.
Despite Arshdeep's performance of 1-38 and Mayank Yadav's 3-48, New Zealand posted a record total of 259/7 in Auckland. Glenn Phillips, who scored 107 runs off 49 balls, achieved his third T20I century, while Michael Bracewell contributed 65 runs from just 25 balls, helping New Zealand set their highest-ever T20I score and the highest against India in this format.
This score eclipsed New Zealand's previous record of 254/5 against Scotland four years ago and surpassed the previous highest score against India, which was 257/3 by England earlier this year in Southampton.
The Indian bowlers faced a challenging outing, receiving treatment similar to what the Indian batsmen have experienced against New Zealand throughout this series.
