Jalandhar, June 12: Young cricketer Arjun Rajput's dream, cultivated in the narrow streets of Ram Nagar and supported by years of dedication, has finally materialized as he has been chosen for the Indian Under-19 team set to tour Sri Lanka next month.
The left-handed batsman and right-arm off-spinner will wear the India jersey for the first time when the squad departs for Sri Lanka on July 4, marking a significant achievement in his journey characterized by hard work and determination.
Coming from a humble background, Arjun's father, Hoti Ram, supports the family by making kulchas and working at a bakery, allowing his son to pursue cricket despite financial challenges.
After the squad announcement, Arjun shared his excitement about representing the nation.
“I am thrilled and proud to reach this level. I am especially excited about our first match in Sri Lanka. We will strive to win every match and perform to the best of our abilities,” he stated to the media.
The young athlete acknowledged his family and mentors for their unwavering support during tough times.
“My father, mother, and brother have always been there for me. Whenever I felt discouraged, they motivated me. Coaches like Vikram Sidhu and Harbhajan Academy have been instrumental in my development,” Arjun remarked.
For Hoti Ram, this selection is a testament to years of faith in his son's abilities.
“I have been making kulchas for many years. Arjun has been playing cricket since he was five. He is incredibly talented and dedicated. Learning about his selection this morning filled me with joy,” he expressed.
“His dream has come true, and this is a very special moment for our family,” he added.
Arjun's cricketing journey began at the Harbhajan Singh Cricket Academy, where he developed his skills during his early years. Despite facing numerous obstacles, he continued to advance under the mentorship of coach Vikram Sidhu.
The Indian team is scheduled to play three One-Day Internationals and two Multi-Day matches against Sri Lanka.
The white-ball segment of the tour will commence on July 4 in Hambantota, where all three one-day matches will be held. Following the limited-overs series, the team will shift to red-ball cricket for two multi-day matches. The first of these matches is set to take place in Galle from July 13 to 16, while the final match of the tour will occur in Colombo from July 20 to 23.
