Argentina Prepares for World Cup Challenge

Kansas City [US], June 16: Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, emphasized the need for caution and respect as they gear up for their FIFA World Cup opener against Algeria. The team's recent experience of a surprising defeat to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 tournament opener is still fresh in their minds.

Argentina will kick off their World Cup journey against Algeria on Tuesday in Kansas City. In the last tournament, led by Lionel Messi, the team faced a rocky start, suffering a 1-2 loss to Saudi Arabia due to two second-half goals. However, they bounced back impressively, defeating Poland and Mexico in the group stage before ultimately claiming victory against France to secure their third World Cup title.

In a press conference, Scaloni, who was part of the team during that unexpected loss, acknowledged Algeria's strengths, noting that they are a formidable opponent with quick players. He stated, “They are a great team that will pose challenges for us.”

Scaloni compared Algeria's playing style to that of Morocco, who recently held Brazil to a draw, praising their talented players and coach, Vladimir Petkovic.

The coach also reflected on the lessons learned from the previous World Cup, asserting that while the first match is significant, it is not the end of the road. “We are confident that our journey does not conclude with the first game,” he remarked.

On the fitness front, Scaloni provided positive updates, revealing that Julian Alvarez has recovered from an ankle injury and will be available for selection. Additionally, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, a key player in the 2022 final, is expected to start after recovering from a finger injury sustained during Aston Villa's UEFA Europa League triumph.

However, defender Nicolas Tagliafico's participation remains uncertain due to a calf injury.

Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi stressed the importance of defensive organization, acknowledging that as reigning champions, they will be a target for every team. He noted that the experience from their 2022 opener should remind them that “any team can create difficulties.”

“We must focus on our game and maintain a solid defensive structure,” he concluded.

Argentina is placed in Group J, competing alongside Austria, Algeria, and Jordan.
