Argentina's Canine Fans Show World Cup Spirit in Style
Proud Pooches in Buenos Aires
In the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires, a unique sight has emerged as thirteen dogs proudly don their Argentina jerseys, showcasing their support for the national team. These furry fans, accompanied by their dog walker, are adding a playful twist to the World Cup excitement.
Nahuel Meneghini, affectionately known as "Nano," takes his pack of dogs through the bustling city center, each wearing jerseys, collars, and leashes that reflect their allegiance to Lionel Messi's team. "I did this out of love for them and for Argentina, especially during the World Cup," Meneghini shared during a stroll with his canine companions.
Dressed in fan gear himself, Meneghini expertly navigates the narrow sidewalks of San Cristobal, drawing smiles and cheers from passersby. "Let’s go, Argentina!" a woman exclaimed as she captured the moment on her phone.
Edgardo Perez, an 80-year-old local, expressed his joy, stating, "These are the only joys we have because nothing ever goes our way, not for workers or retirees. Everything is against us." The group, affectionately dubbed "La Perroneta" on social media, pays homage to the national team’s nickname, "La Scaloneta," under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni.
Meneghini's idea to dress the dogs in Argentina colors came about last week as the team progressed in the tournament. Two of his regulars, Sirio and Roberta, sported jerseys featuring Messi's iconic No. 10, purchased by their owners caught up in the World Cup excitement.
Inspired, Meneghini decided to outfit the rest of the dogs similarly, visiting a pet store to acquire jerseys in various sizes, which the owners eagerly accepted. He also crafted collars and leashes in the national colors, adding rivets to commemorate Argentina's World Cup victories in 1978, 1986, and 2022, along with tags reading "Los perros de Nano" (Nano's Dogs).
Offering pet owners a good deal on these items, Meneghini has seen a surge in interest, with others in the neighborhood placing orders for their pets. The group covers around 60 blocks daily, becoming local celebrities and social media sensations.
As the dogs parade through the streets, 73-year-old Dora Maisano remarked, "Now that is patriotism! Not just peeing and pooping. Everyone wearing the No. 10. Well done, congratulations – they look so cute!"
Meneghini affirmed that the dogs will continue to wear their national colors "forever," regardless of Argentina's performance in the tournament. "But I have faith that we’ll win a fourth cup. After the fourth one, I’ll add another rivet to the leashes."
