Annu Rani Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery, Aims for Competitive Comeback
Annu Rani's Journey Through Injury and Recovery
Annu Rani, a two-time Olympian and former Asian Games champion, has successfully completed knee surgery in Doha after enduring a year of injuries and ongoing pain. The Indian javelin thrower is eager to return to the competitive scene and represent her country once more.
The 34-year-old athlete, who participated in the Tokyo 2020 and is set for the Paris 2024 Olympics, shared her recovery news on social media, reflecting on the past year as one of the toughest in her athletic career, as reported by a sports news outlet.
In her Instagram post, Annu expressed her gratitude, stating, "I am happy and grateful to share that I have successfully undergone my knee surgery in Doha."
Annu elaborated on her struggles, stating, "For nearly a year, I have faced knee injuries and constant pain. This has been one of the toughest periods in my athletic journey, as the discomfort hindered my ability to train and compete effectively."
This injury saga unfolded during a challenging 2026 season for Annu, who holds the national record for women's javelin throw at 63.82m, set in 2022.
Throughout the year, she participated in eight competitions, securing victories in three, yet she was unable to surpass the 60m mark in any event. Her best throw of 57.50m occurred at the Indian Athletics Final Series in New Delhi in September.
Unfortunately, this performance fell short of the Athletics Federation of India's (AFI) qualification standard of 57.62m for the 2026 Asian Games, which excluded her from representing India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
The Asian Games title was claimed by China's Yan Ziyi, who set a new Games record with a throw of 70.46m, while Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi (62.70m) and Sae Takemoto (62.15m) completed the podium.
Annu's challenges were apparent from the season's start, as her eight-year winning streak in domestic events came to an end. She finished third with a throw of 55.78m at the Indian Athletics Series in Sangrur in May.
She later regained her winning form in competitions held in Czechia and Bhubaneswar, ultimately leading the Asian Games selection trial in New Delhi. However, she could not improve her season-best beyond 57.50m.
Her last throw exceeding 60m was at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Chennai in August 2025, where she achieved 61.05m. Earlier that month, she recorded a throw of 62.59m in Poland, marking her first effort beyond 60m in over 15 months, followed by 62.01m in Bhubaneswar.
While Annu has not specified a timeline for her return to competition, her resolve to make a comeback remains unwavering.
She concluded with, "Now begins a new journey of patience, dedication, hard work, and recovery. I understand the path ahead will be challenging, but my desire to represent India again is stronger than ever. My dream is still alive. I will strive to return stronger and give my utmost to bring glory to India."
