Amit Mishra Urges India to Stay Focused Ahead of T20 World Cup Final Against New Zealand
Mishra Responds to Santner's Comments
In New Delhi, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra addressed comments made by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner regarding the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final. Santner had expressed that New Zealand would not shy away from disrupting the home team's celebrations by clinching the title. He stated, "I don’t mind winning the trophy. We have been very consistent and wouldn’t hesitate to break a few hearts in the process."
Mishra, however, downplayed Santner's remarks, emphasizing that while New Zealand is a resilient team, India possesses a stronger lineup. He acknowledged their fighting spirit and fielding skills but insisted that India must remain confident and not overly self-assured. "We know our team is stronger. They are fighters, and their fielding is slightly better, but we need to focus on our strengths and plan effectively against their bowlers," Mishra noted.
India's Strategy Against New Zealand
Mishra highlighted the importance of a solid strategy against New Zealand, who have reached the finals by defeating formidable opponents. He cautioned against underestimating them, stating, "They are not a weak team; they have proven themselves by reaching the finals. We need to approach this match with confidence and a well-thought-out plan."
He also shared insights on how India's spin attack could challenge New Zealand's batters, who are adept at handling spin. Mishra advised maintaining patience and precision, suggesting that bowlers should avoid delivering loose balls. "Building pressure through dot balls can force mistakes from the batsmen. Focus on repeating good deliveries rather than chasing wickets recklessly," he explained.
Tackling Santner's Bowling
Mishra offered specific advice on how to handle Santner, who has a strong track record against India. He noted that Santner relies on his strengths and encourages batsmen to make mistakes. "If he bowls well, don’t panic. Instead, focus on taking singles and doubles, which may prompt him to overextend and deliver a loose ball," Mishra suggested.
With 23 wickets in 26 T20I matches against India and an impressive overall economy rate, Santner's experience should not intimidate the Indian players. Mishra concluded, "Even if Santner concedes runs, it’s part of the game. His experience in India, including in the IPL, means he understands our players well, so we must adapt our tactics accordingly."
