Alpine APL Pipers Maintain Top Position

In Bengaluru, Karnataka, on September 7, the reigning champions, Alpine APL Pipers, managed to secure the top position in the standings, even after suffering a defeat in one of their two matches on Monday. Meanwhile, the CheQ Mumba Masters and PBG Alaskan Knights showcased their resurgence on the third day of the Global Chess League (GCL), as reported by a press release.

The Pipers, competing with white pieces for the first time in this tournament, faced a setback against the PBG Alaskan Knights, losing 7-9 in their opening match of the day. However, they quickly rebounded with a commanding 15-3 victory over FYERS American Gambits, allowing them to ascend to the top of the leaderboard with three match wins. In another match, the Mumba Masters achieved a convincing 12-3 victory against Ganges Grandmasters, propelling them to the second position.

Despite the initial loss, the Pipers made a remarkable comeback, achieving the largest victory margin of Season 4.

Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy were once again the standout performers for the Pipers, each securing their third win in four matches. Vidit skillfully defeated Daniil Dubov, even while under time pressure, while Humpy triumphed over Sara Khadem in just 29 moves. On the prodigy board, Volodar Murzin outperformed Marc’andria Maurizzi, contributing to the team's success.

Reflecting on his performance, Player of the Match Vidit stated, "The morning game was balanced, but I faced time pressure. I felt the pressure in the second game, but I’m pleased to have won."

Earlier in the day, the highlight of the opening match was the highly anticipated clash between world number one Magnus Carlsen and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Carlsen emerged victorious as Anand lost on time during a tense bishop-pawn endgame.

However, Carlsen's win was not sufficient to prevent the Pipers from experiencing their first loss in the tournament, as both Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy, who had previously won their two games, fell to the PBG Alaskan Knights.

Nino Batsiashvili, named Player of the Match, secured the Knights' first victory by defeating Humpy in 44 moves, while Vidit lost on time as 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus applied consistent pressure with solid positional play.

In the day's second match, Ganges Grandmasters' choice to play black after winning the toss proved detrimental, as CheQ Mumba Masters clinched three of the six games and drew the remaining three, marking their second win in four matches.

Carrisa Yip initiated the Mumba Masters' success with a win over Stavroula Tsolakidou, and Player of the Match M Pranesh maintained his composure during a last-minute scramble, forcing the seasoned Levon Aronian to resign after 65 moves.

Bardiya Daneshvar then added three more game points for his team, as Leon Luke Mendonca ran out of time on the prodigy board, temporarily placing the Mumba Masters at the top of the leaderboard until the next match between FYERS American Gambits and Alpine APL Pipers.
