Algeria Prepares for Knockout Stage Showdown

Vancouver [Canada], July 2: Algeria's head coach Vladimir Petkovic emphasized the need for his team to elevate their performance as they gear up to face Switzerland in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

After suffering a 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening match, Algeria bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Jordan and a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria, securing their place in the knockout stage. Petkovic commended his team's offensive capabilities and their historic achievement, marking only the second time an Algerian squad has reached this stage in World Cup history. However, he stressed the importance of continuous improvement, especially against a formidable Swiss team.

“We have allowed too many goals – five out of the seven we conceded came from outside the box. This reflects the quality of our opponents, as demonstrated in our first match,” he remarked.

“On a positive note, we have scored five goals and advanced to the knockout stage, which is a significant milestone for us. We must build on this success and be at our best against a strong Switzerland team, potentially needing to perform beyond the standard 90 minutes,” he added.

Petkovic dismissed the notion that his familiarity with Swiss players would provide any advantage in their upcoming match. The 62-year-old coach, who has a rich history in Swiss football, including managing the national team from 2014 to 2021, stated that such past experiences would not influence the game once it begins.

“Football has become a global sport, and teams are well-acquainted with each other. There are no real secrets anymore. While I know the Swiss players, they are equally aware of me. It will be a pleasure to face them, but once the match starts, it’s all about the players on the field. We must give our all to secure a victory against a very capable Switzerland side,” he concluded.
