Akash Deep Takes on New Role as Deputy Superintendent of Police

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 24: Indian fast bowler Akash Deep has been appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the Bihar government as part of its 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' initiative. He described this new role as a significant responsibility, especially in light of the ongoing student protests regarding the alleged NEET paper leak.

The 29-year-old right-arm pacer, who made his international debut against England during the Ranchi Test in 2024, received his appointment letter from Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary during a ceremony in Patna. Another cricketer, Mukesh Kumar, was also appointed as a DSP under the same sports recruitment policy.

Akash Deep has played 10 Tests for India, claiming 28 wickets and scoring 163 runs, which includes a half-century.

After receiving his appointment, Akash expressed gratitude to the Bihar government for its support of athletes, stating that this initiative would motivate the youth of the state.

He remarked, 'This is a significant responsibility. It serves as a great inspiration for the youth of Bihar, showing that the state government supports those who work hard. Thanks to CM Samrat Choudhary's encouragement for sports, the traditional mindset has shifted, and more young people are pursuing sports. The distribution of 20-25 job letters today reassures parents that their children's futures are secure.'

The appointments were made under the 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' initiative, which provides direct government jobs to athletes who excel in national and international competitions.

As per the Bihar State Sports Authority, exceptional athletes can qualify for Class-I and other senior government positions, including DSP, Sub-Inspector, and Panchayati Raj Officer, without needing to take standard competitive exams.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary shared images from the event, emphasizing the government's commitment to discovering sporting talent throughout Bihar, enhancing sports infrastructure, and creating opportunities for athletes to represent the state and nation in prestigious events like the Olympics, World Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and IPL.

In light of the ongoing student protests regarding the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, Akash Deep urged demonstrators to maintain peace while expressing confidence that the government would prioritize students' interests.

He stated, 'Protesting is a constitutional right. I believe that everything is better when conducted peacefully. No harm should come to the students. I am fully confident that the government's commitments will favor the students. Both students and athletes are the future of our country, and it is a shared responsibility of citizens and the government to honor their sentiments. Students should also act responsibly, recognizing that this is our country.'

Since July 22, large-scale protests have erupted in Patna over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, with demonstrators calling for accountability and reforms in the examination system.

The protests have led to clashes with police and demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
