Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 30: Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal praised Ajinkya Rahane following his announcement of retirement from international cricket, emphasizing that Rahane has been a "cornerstone for Indian cricket" and that his unique ability to navigate challenging situations on the field is irreplaceable.

Rahane, who last represented India in 2023, concluded a remarkable international career filled with crucial innings and instances of composed leadership that earned him admiration from teammates.

In an interview, Madan described Rahane as a "true gentleman" in the sport, highlighting his lack of involvement in controversies.

"Rahane has been a cornerstone of Indian cricket. Any player who has dedicated 12 to 15 years to international cricket is undoubtedly esteemed; he is regarded as a great. In my opinion, Ajinkya Rahane exemplified what it means to be a gentleman cricketer. I have never witnessed any controversy surrounding him. He played around 85 Test matches, amassing over 5,000 runs, including centuries, and also contributed significantly in One Day Internationals with over 2,000 runs," stated Madan.

The 1983 World Cup champion noted that Rahane's impressive performances will ensure he is remembered as a great player. He also acknowledged Rahane's contributions to Mumbai cricket, a city known for producing exceptional talent.

For Madan, like many Indian fans, the pinnacle of Rahane's career was his leadership during the 2020 Adelaide Test, where India faced a humiliating defeat, bowled out for just 36 runs. After regular captain Virat Kohli left the squad for personal reasons, Rahane stepped up as captain, guiding the team to a remarkable 2-1 series victory against all odds.

Despite numerous injuries within the team and the emergence of younger players like Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj, Rahane's steady demeanor and the collective effort of the enthusiastic youngsters led India to one of its most memorable series wins.

"His most significant highlight, in my view, was when we were bowled out for 36 runs in Australia and then went on to win the series 2-1. That illustrates what an extraordinary leader he was. To recover from such a setback and lead the team to victory showcases his calmness and strategic thinking. Ajinkya Rahane has served India exceptionally well. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors," he remarked.

Madan holds Rahane's Test batting in high esteem, noting that despite the presence of talented youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, the team will miss a player like 'Jinx', known for his ability to handle pressure and rebuild innings during crises.

"His absence will be felt, as a player with 15 years of experience is hard to replace. However, no one can genuinely fill Ajinkya Rahane's shoes. He was a player who consistently held his ground during tough times. When quick wickets fell, he managed to stabilize the innings," he explained.

"The young talents you mentioned—Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, or Yashasvi Jaiswal—are all exceptional players. But only time will tell if they can reach the same level as Ajinkya Rahane," he added.

Rahane boasts an undefeated record as a Test captain, with four wins, two draws, and the highest win percentage among Indian Test captains with at least five matches. His captaincy included a memorable comeback victory in Melbourne and a historic win at the Gabba, ending Australia's long-standing unbeaten streak during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won 2-1. He also led India to significant Test victories against Australia in Dharamshala in 2017 and against Afghanistan.

When asked if Rahane deserved more captaincy opportunities, Madan acknowledged that while Rahane excelled whenever given the chance, replacing established captains like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who led India to the ICC World Test Championship finals, was a challenging task for selectors.

"However, he made the most of the opportunities he had, and the results speak for themselves. International cricket is a high-pressure environment, and for a player like Ajinkya Rahane to serve for 15 years is commendable. I wish him all the best for his future journey," he concluded.

In his Test career, Rahane played 85 matches and 144 innings, scoring 5,077 runs, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties, with an average of 38.46 and a strike rate of 49.50.

In ODIs, he participated in 90 matches and 87 innings, accumulating 2,962 runs, with 3 centuries and 24 fifties, averaging 35.26 and a strike rate of 78.63. In T20Is, he played 20 matches and 20 innings, scoring 375 runs, with no centuries and one fifty, averaging 20.83 and a strike rate of 113.29.
