Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 7: Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has expressed that he holds no regrets regarding his international retirement, feeling fulfilled after dedicating his all on the field. The middle-order batsman also mentioned his openness to exploring coaching or mentorship roles in the future.
In a recent interview, Rahane was introduced as a marquee player for the Amsterdam Flames in the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), which is the first ICC-sanctioned T20 league in Europe. The tournament is set to take place from August 26 to September 20, 2026, featuring six city-based franchises competing across 33 matches, marking a significant milestone for cricket in Europe.
This announcement follows Rahane's retirement from international cricket after a remarkable 14-year career with Team India, where he played a pivotal role in India's Test cricket success both at home and abroad, alongside notable performances in limited-overs formats.
During the interview, Rahane shared that he contemplated his retirement decision for nearly a month, often reflecting on whether he had any regrets. Having last represented India in 2023, he feels content with his contributions to the sport.
“I am very satisfied with my decision and the cricket I have played. I tend not to dwell on the past. I spent about 25-30 days contemplating this decision, questioning myself daily about any regrets. Ultimately, I found none. I gave my all as a player,” he stated.
Rahane emphasized that he does not wish to look back with a sense of longing. “I believe I have accomplished everything I set out to do. If a player can walk away feeling they have given their all and have no regrets, that is the best feeling,” he added.
Looking ahead, Rahane expressed his desire to share his experiences globally rather than confining them to a limited circle. He aims to participate in various leagues worldwide, believing he could excel as a mentor or coach due to his deep understanding of player psychology gained throughout his career.
“As a cricketer, I want to think on a larger scale. I don’t want to limit my experience to a small group; I want to share it globally. I’m open to playing in any league and sharing my knowledge,” Rahane explained.
“While I still have a passion for playing, I also believe I could be an effective coach and mentor, understanding players' mentalities from my own experiences,” he concluded.
In an era dominated by stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahane's steady performance and leadership earned him recognition as one of Indian cricket's most respected figures, known for his calm demeanor and positive influence.
In Test cricket, Rahane participated in 85 matches, amassing 5,077 runs, including 12 centuries and 26 fifties, with an average of 38.46.
He boasts an unbeaten record as a Test captain, achieving four wins and two draws, with the highest win percentage among Indian Test captains with at least five matches.
His captaincy included a remarkable comeback victory in Melbourne and a historic win at the Gabba, which ended Australia's long-standing unbeaten streak during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
After a disappointing loss in Adelaide, where India was bowled out for just 36 runs, Rahane stepped up as captain in Kohli's absence, leading a young team to a memorable series victory.
In ODIs, he played 90 matches, scoring 2,962 runs with three centuries and 24 fifties, while in T20Is, he participated in 20 matches, accumulating 375 runs.
Overall, Rahane has scored 8,414 runs in 195 international matches, with a best score of 188. He is also the eighth-highest run-scorer in the IPL, with 5,367 runs and one title with Chennai Super Kings in 2023.
