Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 7: Former Indian cricket star Ajinkya Rahane has been announced as the marquee player for the Amsterdam Flames in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL). Rahane expressed that his ambition to share his extensive experience on a global stage motivated him to join the franchise.

The Amsterdam Flames revealed Rahane's signing on Friday, marking a significant addition to the ETPL, which aims to enhance the growth of cricket across Europe.

In a conversation about his new role, Rahane shared his admiration for co-owner and legendary Australian captain Steve Waugh. A call from Waugh after Rahane's retirement sparked the opportunity for him to participate in the ETPL. After careful consideration, the 38-year-old recognized that this league would be an excellent platform to leverage his 15 years of international cricket experience.

“Joining the ETPL is a fantastic opportunity for me. After announcing my retirement, Steve Waugh reached out to me within minutes. Having known him for years and admired his leadership, I was in a unique mindset at that moment,” Rahane explained.

“I asked for a day to think it over, and after our follow-up conversation, I realized this was a great chance to be part of the ETPL. With my extensive experience in various formats and nearly two decades in the IPL, I felt this was the right move for me.”

Rahane expressed his desire to share his knowledge and experience with players globally, stating, “I want to contribute to the game on a larger scale, helping others benefit from my journey.”

The ETPL is Europe’s first ICC-sanctioned T20 league, set to run from August 26 to September 20, 2026. Six city-based franchises, including Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, and Rotterdam, will compete in 33 matches, marking a pivotal moment for European cricket.

Discussing the potential for cricket in Europe, Rahane noted that while England has historically dominated, the recent performances of Ireland and the Netherlands, along with Italy's impressive showing in the T20 World Cup, indicate a growing competitiveness in the region.

“When I’ve played against teams like Ireland and the Netherlands, they’ve always shown a strong desire to win and learn. Their passion is evident, and Ireland recently made headlines by defeating India in a T20I series,” he remarked.

Rahane believes the ETPL could serve as a vital platform for European cricketers, potentially opening doors to the IPL, the world’s most prestigious and lucrative franchise league. “This is a fantastic opportunity for European players to showcase their skills. You never know when an opportunity might arise, especially if IPL scouts are watching,” he added.

He also highlighted the Netherlands' progress in limited-overs cricket, noting their advancement to the Super 12 in the T20 World Cup 2022 and their recent victories over South Africa in both T20 and ODI formats.

Rahane emphasized the importance of exposure for players from non-Test-playing nations, stating, “Exposure is crucial for building confidence. Even if players don’t perform well initially, the experience gained is invaluable.”

“The Netherlands has been improving significantly, and their players are gaining confidence by competing with experienced players in various leagues,” he continued.

As T20 cricket continues to grow rapidly, Rahane remains passionate about contributing to the sport. “T20 is expanding quickly, and the opportunities for players are immense. I’m excited to play in this league and share my knowledge to make a meaningful impact,” he concluded.
