Abhishek Sharma's Cricketing Inspiration
Abhishek Sharma, the talented 25-year-old Indian cricketer, recently shared insights into his cricketing journey and the inspirations behind his passion for the sport. The current World No.1 T20I batter has been showcasing remarkable performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), notably scoring a half-century in the T20 World Cup final after a challenging start to the tournament.
Sharma revealed that his father's background as a cricketer significantly influenced his love for the game. He expressed that watching thrilling matches, particularly India vs Pakistan, fueled his desire to compete at a high level. “Growing up in a cricket-loving household, with my father playing Ranji Trophy for Punjab and coaching, inspired me immensely. Watching iconic matches made me aspire to reach that level,” he shared during a conversation with Jiostar. He also recounted how a standout performance in an Under-12 tournament solidified his decision to pursue cricket professionally. “I realized my potential when I excelled in that tournament, scoring runs and taking wickets,” he added.
Influences from Yuvraj Singh and Travis Head
Training with Yuvraj Singh
Abhishek further discussed his training experiences with Yuvraj Singh, whom he idolized throughout his childhood. He noted that Yuvraj emphasized the importance of developing a mindset geared towards winning matches for India. “Training with Yuvi paaji was a pivotal moment for me. He guided me early on, and during the lockdown, I was fortunate to train closely with him. He instilled in me the belief that our training was aimed at achieving greatness, not just for domestic cricket but for impactful performances for India,” Abhishek explained.
Collaboration with Travis Head
On his partnership with Australian cricketer Travis Head, Abhishek mentioned that he had been following Head's career even before they became teammates. He sought advice from Head regarding his batting approach. “I admired Travis’s consistency across formats. When he joined SRH, I was eager to learn about his mindset. He advised me to focus on watching the ball closely and to be aggressive from the first delivery if the opportunity arises. I incorporated this strategy into my practice leading up to the IPL,” he stated.
