AB de Villiers Highlights Concerns for Mumbai Indians Ahead of IPL 2026
AB de Villiers Raises Concerns About Mumbai Indians' Bowling
AB de Villiers, the former captain of South Africa and a key player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has pointed out a potential weakness in the Mumbai Indians (MI) as they prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). He believes that despite MI's confidence in their squad, they may face challenges with Trent Boult, the former New Zealand left-arm pacer. Boult returned to MI last season after a stint with Rajasthan Royals, having previously played for MI in IPL 2020 and 2021.
De Villiers compared Boult's current performance to that of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, noting that Boult seems to have lost some pace and is not as effective as he was during his peak years from 2018 to 2020. He mentioned that Boult has become more expensive in recent seasons, which could pose a problem for MI as they enter a lengthy tournament, potentially leading to a false sense of security regarding their bowling lineup.
Concerns About Boult's Performance
"My main concern is Trent Boult. It's reminiscent of Bhuvi's situation, where he has lost a bit of pace. He isn't as sharp as he was from 2018 to 2020 and has been more expensive in the games I've seen him play. MI might think they have sufficient backup, but this could be misleading. Opposing batters might target this weakness," de Villiers shared on his YouTube channel.
Evaluating Boult's Impact Despite Concerns
Even though Boult may not be at his peak, he still possesses the ability to make a significant impact with the new ball for MI. His experience at Wankhede Stadium and his role in MI's last title win in 2020 cannot be overlooked. Last season, Boult played 16 matches, taking 22 wickets with an average of 23.50 and a strike rate of 15.7. While his economy rate was 8.96, he remained a key wicket-taker, including a four-wicket haul.
Boult continues to be a valuable asset for the captain, especially with Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya as additional seam options. Early breakthroughs with the new ball can provide MI with a competitive edge. If Boult's effectiveness diminishes, MI can rely on Corbin Bosch, who can deliver a heavy ball and add depth to their batting lineup, potentially turning this situation into a strategic advantage.
Mumbai Indians are entering IPL 2026 after five challenging seasons, with their last title win in 2020. As five-time champions and one of the league's most successful teams, they aim to improve their performance this season, with Hardik Pandya leading the charge. With a strong Indian core featuring Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, they are well-equipped for the challenge ahead.
The overseas contingent, including Quinton de Kock, Will Jacks, Mitchell Santner, Boult, Sherfane Rutherford, Bosch, and Ryan Rickelton, adds further strength to MI's lineup. Their first match in IPL 2026 is scheduled against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on March 29, 2026. Despite finishing fourth in the previous season, securing a playoff spot, the team understands that anything less than a final appearance would be disappointing for their fans.
