Chopra's Strong Support for Dhoni's Leadership

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed a bold opinion regarding MS Dhoni's position within the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He believes that the iconic player should undoubtedly be the captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). Chopra's statements have intensified discussions surrounding Dhoni's future role. Although it is likely that Dhoni's responsibilities will be more adaptable, he is expected to participate in his 19th IPL season with CSK.

During a segment on JioHotstar, Chopra articulated his reasoning for why Dhoni should lead the team if he is part of the playing XI. He stated, 'If Dhoni is playing, then he has to be the captain. I’m clear in my mind that if he’s around and keeping for 20 overs, he’s going to be on the field for the entire game.' He further challenged, 'Out of the 22 players on that field, find me a better captain than Mahendra Singh Dhoni. I will accept my point if there is one. However, why is he not taking the lead if he is present?'

Chopra emphasized that if CSK aims to maximize Dhoni's potential for a turnaround, he must assume the captaincy role. His comments come at a time when CSK is undergoing significant changes, with Ruturaj Gaikwad stepping in as captain after Dhoni's resignation prior to the 2024 season.

In recent seasons, Dhoni's on-field involvement has gradually diminished. The introduction of the impact substitute rule has further limited his role, often relegating him to a finisher's position during the final overs. However, the current composition of CSK's squad suggests a long-term transition, with potential adjustments in wicketkeeping responsibilities, as players like Sanju Samson are already part of the team.

Despite these changes, Dhoni continues to wield considerable influence both on and off the field. His vast experience remains a crucial asset, especially following CSK's challenging IPL 2025 season, where they finished at the bottom of the standings. According to CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, Dhoni will be available for the entire IPL 2026 season, but the management will decide his specific role. The ongoing debate about whether Dhoni will return as captain or take on a different leadership role is pivotal as the team seeks to recover under Gaikwad's guidance.
