Upcoming ODI World Cup Qualifier Scheduled

The ODI World Cup Qualifier for 2027 is set to take place from February 22 to March 23, 2024, as reported by a sports news outlet.

While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the dates for the tournament, the location for hosting the matches is still pending.

According to the new qualification format introduced by the ICC in July, the champion of the 10-team Qualifier will earn a direct entry into the group stage of the 14-team World Cup.

Teams finishing in second, third, and fourth positions will move on to the Super Series, where they will vie for the last available spot in the 12-team main event, with only the top-ranked team advancing.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, scheduled from October 4 to November 21.

The Qualifier will include the two lowest-ranked Full Members in the ODI standings, excluding the host nations South Africa and Zimbabwe, as of September 30, 2026. They will be joined by the top four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the leading four from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

The Qualifier Playoff will consist of eight teams, featuring the bottom four from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top four from the Challenge League, which is the third tier of cricket competitions. The format for the Playoff is still under discussion, but the top four teams will qualify for the World Cup Qualifier.

The Challenge League includes 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with each group participating in three round-robin tournaments throughout the qualification cycle. The top two teams from each group will advance to the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

Currently, the West Indies sit at 10th in the ODI rankings and have two matches left against India before the September 30 deadline. Their ability to secure a top-eight finish will depend on their performance and the outcomes of other matches, particularly the series between Afghanistan (ranked eighth) and Ireland (ranked 12th). If Ireland wins the series decisively, the West Indies could still qualify with two wins against India. Conversely, if Afghanistan prevails, the West Indies will likely need to pursue the qualification route.

Notably, the West Indies did not qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup, facing a devastating defeat in the Super Over against the Netherlands during the Qualifier held in Harare, which dashed their hopes of participating in the tournament.
