Controversy Erupts Over Murali Kartik's Comment During IPL 2025 Qualifier
Murali Kartik Faces Backlash for Insensitive Commentary
Former Indian cricketer and commentator Murali Kartik has come under scrutiny following a controversial remark made during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians.
The incident occurred during the second innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Kartik described the dismissal of PBKS opener Priyansh Arya as "the demise of Priyansh Arya" while discussing Punjab's chase of 204 runs.
This comment, broadcast live, quickly sparked outrage among fans on social media, with many deeming it "insensitive" and "unacceptable" for a professional sports commentary. There have been increasing calls for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take action against Kartik, with some fans advocating for his immediate removal from the commentary team.
The 48-year-old made this statement after Arya, who had given Punjab a strong start with 20 runs, was dismissed by the Mumbai bowling attack. While Kartik seemed to refer to the player's exit from the game, the use of the term "demise" in this context was criticized by viewers.
Kartik's Remarks Overshadow Punjab's Victory
Despite Punjab Kings achieving a significant five-wicket victory to reach their first IPL final since 2014, the focus shifted to Kartik's controversial language. The phrase "after the demise of Priyansh Arya" quickly went viral, prompting a flood of angry reactions on social media.
One fan expressed, "How can a national broadcaster permit such careless language? 'Demise' is not a term to be used lightly. Murali Kartik should either apologize or be removed." Another user commented, "That was not commentary; it was a serious lapse in judgment. An unforgivable mistake."
Shreyas Iyer Shines Amidst Controversy
In spite of the uproar, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer emerged as the star of the match, scoring an impressive 87 runs off 41 balls to lead his team to victory with one over remaining. His innings included five fours and eight sixes, and he was well-supported by Nehal Wadhera, who contributed 48 runs off 29 balls. Together, they formed an 84-run partnership that secured Punjab's win.
Punjab Kings are now preparing for a title showdown against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3. This will mark the fourth encounter between the two teams this season, with RCB currently leading the series 2-1.
