Concerns Grow Over FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast in India
Challenges in Securing Broadcast Rights
Football enthusiasts in India may face disappointing news as the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches. Despite the event being just around the corner, there has yet to be a confirmed broadcasting agreement in India. The primary issue lies in the unresolved negotiations between FIFA and JioHotstar.
Negotiation Stalemate
According to reports, JioHotstar proposed approximately $20 million for the broadcasting rights of the 2026 World Cup, a figure significantly lower than FIFA's asking price of around $100 million. Sony also engaged in discussions but ultimately declined to make an offer.
Previous Deals and Expectations
For the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Jio Cinema secured the rights for about $60 million. FIFA is looking for a similar amount this time, but companies appear hesitant to invest at that level.
Reasons for Difficulty in India
Several factors contribute to the challenges in finalizing a deal. The matches will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, resulting in late-night broadcasts in India. Additionally, the sluggish advertising market and the perception of football as a niche sport in India deter companies from committing substantial funds.
Similar Situation in China
India is not alone in this predicament; China also has not finalized any broadcasting agreements for the World Cup. Previously, CCTV would secure the rights, but this time, that has not occurred.
What Lies Ahead?
FIFA has stated that negotiations are ongoing in both India and China. Broadcast deals have been established in over 175 countries worldwide. With the tournament set to commence on June 11, significant decisions regarding broadcasting are expected in the coming days.
