Concerns Arise Over Security Breach in Pakistan Super League
Security Protocol Breach at PSL
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza are under scrutiny for allegedly violating security protocols during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), raising alarms regarding player safety. The two players reportedly allowed four unauthorized individuals access to the hotel floor where the Lahore Qalandars were staying.
The situation is currently being investigated, with the Punjab Police sending a letter to PSL CEO Salman Naseer. According to the letter, both players are accused of 'disregarding directives' and 'forcefully escorting' the unauthorized guests to a player's hotel room on Saturday night, where they allegedly stayed for about three hours. This incident has also gained traction on social media.
The police report indicates that the team's Liaison Officer had approached the Pakistan Cricket Board’s security and anti-corruption manager to seek permission for the four individuals known to Raza to enter his room, but this request was denied. Furthermore, the letter states that Qalandars owner Sameen Rana attempted to obtain approval from PSL CEO Naseer, which was also rejected due to security concerns.
Despite these refusals, the players reportedly escorted the visitors into the hotel, ignoring the objections of on-duty security personnel. Authorities have labeled this incident a blatant breach of established protocols meant to safeguard the safety and integrity of players and officials.
The police communication concludes with a recommendation for a formal review and emphasizes the need for actions to prevent similar violations in the future. This issue is particularly sensitive given the PSL's commitment to stringent security measures since its return to Pakistan, which includes restricted access zones and closely monitored interactions with outsiders.
This season, security restrictions have been heightened, with matches being played in empty stadiums, officially attributed to energy-saving measures amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. In the midst of this controversy, the Qalandars continued their campaign on March 29, facing off against Karachi Kings after a strong victory in their opening match against Hyderabad Kingsmen.
