A Charitable Tournament with a Purpose

A recent pickleball tournament in Siouxland, USA, transformed competitive play into a heartfelt community effort, as participants rallied to support a crucial local service. Held on Saturday, April 4, the event successfully raised nearly $4,000 for the Siouxland Soup Kitchen, surpassing initial expectations and highlighting the increasing importance of sports in community engagement.

Organized by the Siouxland Pickleball Association, the tournament saw participation from 20 teams and 40 players, as reported by local media. While the matches were intense, the emphasis was on a greater cause—providing meals for those in need.

This event marked the second year in a row that the association has hosted a fundraising tournament to benefit a local charity. The decision to support the Siouxland Soup Kitchen was particularly meaningful due to its direct impact on the community. Event organizer Cheri Van Valkingburg remarked, “Everyone is here to have fun; there are no cash prizes, just a shared commitment to support the soup kitchen, and we love doing it.”

Initially aiming to raise $3,000, the enthusiasm from the community helped exceed this goal. The funds raised will be allocated to purchasing food, ensuring ongoing assistance for families facing food insecurity in the area.

For the Siouxland Soup Kitchen, this contribution is invaluable. Executive director Lyn Kluender shared that the organization serves between 150 to 200 families each day, making community support vital for its operations. “We are incredibly thankful for the public’s support, which allows us to feed those in need,” Kluender stated. “Without their contributions, we wouldn’t be able to exist.”

Kluender also expressed gratitude for being selected as the beneficiary, emphasizing that it not only provides financial aid but also raises awareness about the organization’s mission. The tournament highlighted the strength of local initiatives and the spirit of collective goodwill, reminding everyone that recreational sports can significantly contribute to solving real-world issues—one game and one meal at a time.
