Colombia Triumphs Over Uzbekistan in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener
Colombia's Strong Start in World Cup 2026
Colombia entered the FIFA World Cup 2026 with aspirations of redemption after failing to qualify for the previous tournament in Qatar. The Cafeteros began their campaign on a high note, securing a 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan. Luis Díaz made a significant impact in his World Cup debut, contributing a goal and an assist. Despite the loss, Uzbekistan showcased commendable performance in their inaugural World Cup match.
“Winning this first game was crucial for us. We controlled the first half, but they improved in the second,” remarked Díaz, who plays for Bayern Munich. Daniel Muñoz scored the opening goal in the 40th minute, assisted by Díaz, who later netted the tiebreaker in the 65th minute after his shot deflected off the goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.
Colombia's coach, Nestor Lorenzo, acknowledged the challenges of the match, stating, “We anticipated a tough encounter.” Uzbekistan's Fayzullaev Abbosbek scored in the 60th minute, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome in front of a supportive crowd of 80,824 at Estadio Azteca.
“It’s a wonderful feeling, but the emotional weight affected some players physically,” Lorenzo added. With this defeat, three out of four debuting teams in this World Cup lost their opening matches. Cape Verde managed a draw against Spain, while Curaçao and Jordan faced defeats.
“For a smaller team like ours, losing 3-1 is quite disappointing,” said Uzbekistan's coach Fabio Cannavaro. “We possess good quality, but we need to develop further. This experience is valuable.” Jaminton Campaz sealed the win for Colombia with a goal in stoppage time. Ranked 13th globally, Colombia was favored against 50th-ranked Uzbekistan. Their best World Cup performance was reaching the quarterfinals in Brazil in 2014.
“We needed to start strong. Now we can celebrate tonight,” said midfielder Gustavo Puerta. Colombia currently leads Group K, ahead of Portugal and Congo, who played to a surprising 1-1 draw earlier. Colombia's next match is against Congo in Guadalajara, Mexico, while Uzbekistan will face Portugal.
“We are preparing for a challenging match against a strong team,” Lorenzo noted. Colombia finished third in South American qualifying, while Uzbekistan secured second place in their Asian qualifying group.
Ghana Secures Last-Minute Victory Against Panama
Ghana Edge Past Panama With Last Minute Goal
In another thrilling encounter, Ghana clinched a 1-0 victory over Panama thanks to a last-minute goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. The decisive moment came in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Yirenkyi tapped in a cross from Brandon Thomas-Asante, igniting celebrations among his teammates.
“We focused on getting the ball to the wings and creating opportunities in the box,” said Yirenkyi, who recently scored his first international goal in a friendly against Wales. Ghana played without key midfielder Thomas Partey, who was unable to enter Canada due to ongoing legal issues in England.
Panama's only shot on goal in the first half came early, but goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made a crucial save. After sustaining injuries, Ati-Zigi was replaced at halftime by Benjamin Asare. Ghana's coach Carlos Queiroz stated that Ati-Zigi would undergo further evaluation.
This victory places Ghana at the top of Group L, alongside England, who defeated Croatia 4-2 earlier in the day. The match was tightly contested, especially in the first hour, but both teams began to create more chances as the game progressed.
“Panama had a strong first half, but we found our rhythm in the second half, which led to the winning goal,” said Antoine Semenyo, who initiated the play that resulted in the goal.
