Coco Gauff Begins US Open Journey with a Strong Victory

New York [US], September 1: American tennis star Coco Gauff kicked off her US Open journey with a solid win against Zeynep Sonmez in her opening match on Tuesday.

Competing in front of a full house at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gauff showcased her resilience by saving three break points during a lengthy six-deuce game that lasted nine minutes, ultimately holding serve at 3-3. The world number four then displayed her trademark skill and poise, securing a 6-3, 6-4 victory in just 1 hour and 20 minutes. This date marks a significant moment for Gauff, as last year she faced an early exit in the round of 16 against Naomi Osaka.

After the match, Gauff reflected on her performance, stating, "In the game where I got broken, I might have eased up on my first serve. I aimed for a big kick, but it didn’t work out. I focused on holding my serve, knowing it takes a lot to break me, and I felt confident about breaking in the next game, which I did."

During the post-match press conference, she added, "I’m not sure what calmed my nerves. Perhaps it was the confidence I built this week, knowing my opponent would need to play exceptionally well for me to lose. Zeynep played at a high level today, and I’m just pleased to have come through that second set."

Since the beginning of 2020, Gauff has achieved 81 victories in Grand Slam matches, ranking third behind Iga Swiatek (109) and Aryna Sabalenka (106). Notably, she has triumphed in seven of her eight first-round matches at the US Open.

In another match, Filipino rising star Alexandra Eala also progressed to the second round for the second consecutive year, defeating American qualifier Mary Stoiana in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, in just 1 hour and 17 minutes.
