Clement Turpin's Refereeing Credentials

Who is Clement Turpin?

At 44 years old, Turpin has been part of FIFA's international officiating list since 2010 and is recognized as one of the top referees in Europe. This match will mark his fourth assignment in the current World Cup, having previously officiated England's 4-2 victory over Croatia, Paraguay's match against Australia, and Colombia's Round of 16 win over Ghana.

Turpin is also known for his contentious relationship with England's manager Thomas Tuchel, who criticized him following Bayern Munich's UEFA Champions League quarterfinal loss to Manchester City in the 2022-23 season. Tuchel expressed his dissatisfaction with Turpin's performance, stating, "Two things couldn't keep up with the level – the pitch wasn't in good condition and also the referee, unfortunately, was Grade E," and rated him poorly.

Assistant referee Nicolas Danos has been on FIFA's list since 2013 and has participated in every UEFA European Championship since 2016. Benjamin Pages, who joined FIFA's international assistant referee list in 2018, has frequently collaborated with Turpin. Fourth official Alejandro Hernández has been a FIFA referee since 2014 and is officiating his first international tournament as an on-field referee in this World Cup. Reserve assistant José Enrique Naranjo has been a FIFA-listed official since 2019 and has already officiated during the tournament.

Throughout his career, Turpin has officiated at three FIFA World Cups, UEFA European Championships, and various prestigious club tournaments, showcasing his capability to manage high-stakes matches. Brisard has faced criticism in the past, notably for disallowing a goal by Egypt against Argentina in the Round of 16, which raised questions about potential bias in favor of Argentina and Lionel Messi.
