Christopher Haworth Claims Men's Singles Title at Greater Zion Cup
Haworth and Waters/Johns Shine at Carvana Championship
At the Carvana Championship, part of the Greater Zion Cup held at Black Desert Resort in Utah on March 29, Christopher Haworth triumphed in the men’s singles event, earning the World No. 1 ranking. Meanwhile, the mixed doubles title was secured by Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns. The finals showcased impressive performances, culminating in a thrilling finish that captivated fans on the PPA Tour.
Waters and Johns faced off against the top-seeded duo of Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin, winning decisively with scores of 11-5, 11-0, and 15-13. Initially, the top seeds dominated, achieving a remarkable 25-0 streak from a tied score of 5-5 to an 8-0 lead in the final game. However, Bright and Patriquin displayed remarkable resilience, saving eight championship points to tie the score at 13-13 in the final game.
Johns commented on the tense moments, stating, “Nine championship points are a lot. You’d hope to get it in the first few, but it’s better than going to Game 4.” Bright reflected on their comeback, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of racquet sports: “It’s never over till it’s over. There’s no clock to run out, so Hayden and I just kept telling ourselves to keep fighting.”
In the men’s singles final, Haworth overcame Federico Staksrud with scores of 11-9 and 11-5, avenging his previous loss at the Texas Open and marking his sixth title on the PPA Tour. This victory was particularly significant as it elevated him to the top of the PPA men’s singles rankings, surpassing Hunter Johnson.
Haworth expressed his gratitude, saying, “I feel super blessed to be able to play this sport and play in front of incredible fans. It’s just amazing.” He entered the tournament with modest expectations but acknowledged the high level of competition.
Earlier in the tournament, a significant upset occurred when Hunter Johnson was eliminated in the round of 32 after losing in straight games to JW Johnson, paving the way for a new World No. 1.
