Shenzhen, Sep 2: In a remarkable display at the China Masters, a BWF Super 750 event, the mixed doubles team from Chinese Taipei, Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin-hui, achieved a stunning victory over the newly crowned world champions, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue, winning in straight sets.

The world-ranked 48 duo triumphed with scores of 23-21, 21-10 in just 38 minutes, overcoming a late deficit in the first game before dominating the second to eliminate the French pair from the competition.

After trailing 19-17 in the initial game, Liu and Hsu rallied to level the score, saved a game point, and ultimately clinched the first game 23-21. With newfound confidence, they returned in the second game to secure a decisive 21-10 win.

“Knowing they had just become world champions, we were eager to challenge them; our desire to win was even stronger,” Liu remarked, as reported by BWF.

Hsu credited their aggressive strategy and execution as pivotal to their success against the reigning champions.

“Our offense was key; we executed our game plan effectively, which set a solid foundation for us,” he explained.

Liu noted that the shift in momentum during the first game altered the match's dynamics, boosting their confidence while increasing pressure on their opponents.

“The pressure shifted to them, and we felt good. This allowed us to stick to our game style with even greater confidence,” Liu added.

This victory marks a continuation of Liu and Hsu's impressive form, having recently won the US Open in late June and reached the finals of the Canada Open shortly after. Their performances have underscored the growing synergy in their partnership.

Hsu mentioned that their progress stems from honing critical aspects of their gameplay, especially their coordination and the initial phases of rallies.

“Our communication has improved, and we have effectively set up our serves and returns,” she stated. “The hard work in training is now yielding results.”

For Gicquel and Delrue, this defeat marked a disappointing end to their first tournament since becoming world champions just two weeks prior.

Gicquel acknowledged that the French duo lost their rhythm after a strong start and struggled to maintain their usual gameplay as the match unfolded.

“Our performance was lacking. We started well, but then we became a bit anxious. We forgot to play our game and make them move,” Gicquel admitted.
