Chennaiyin FC Seeks Redemption Against NorthEast United in ISL Clash
Chennaiyin FC Aims for Strong Finish
Chennaiyin FC is determined to bounce back after their recent loss to Punjab FC as they prepare to face NorthEast United in their second-to-last match of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-2026 season this Sunday.
The two teams are closely matched in the standings, with Chennaiyin sitting at 13th place and NorthEast United just above them at 12th. Both clubs are eager to climb the table as the season approaches its end. Historically, Chennaiyin has the upper hand in their encounters, having won 11 out of 24 matches across all competitions, including three of the last five meetings.
Insights from the Coach
In a pre-match press conference, Chennaiyin's head coach, Clifford Rayes Miranda, shared his thoughts on the upcoming match and the strengths of their opponents: "Both teams are eager for victory, just like in any other match. Our focus remains on competing for the three points. This does not change for us."
He noted, "NorthEast United is a team that prefers to play an attractive style of football, maintaining possession and displaying versatility in their approach. They have faced challenges this season, missing several international players, which mirrors our own struggles. The delayed league start has also impacted their squad. I anticipate a balanced contest ahead."
Reflecting on the Season's Challenges
Chennaiyin's last match ended in disappointment due to an unfortunate own goal, marking a tough season for the team. Miranda expressed his frustration over the narrow margins that have not favored them but remains optimistic about their progress.
"We were unfortunate to concede that goal from a set-piece, especially since we had defended well against previous set-pieces. The ball hitting (Lalrinliana) Hnamte's back and going in was just bad luck. This season has been about taking chances when they arise, which is crucial," Miranda explained.
"We are on the right path, and with continued focus for the full 90 minutes, we will see improvements," he added.
Player Insights
Defender PC Laldinpuia joined Miranda at the press conference, discussing the tactical shifts from the previous season and his role in late-game situations.
"With a new coach comes a new philosophy, and players must adapt to the changes. Our responsibility is to embrace the system," he stated.
"As a defender, my goal is to perform at my best whenever called upon, especially during the challenging final minutes of the match," he added.
Team Update
Miranda confirmed that there are no new injury issues to report ahead of the match against NorthEast United.
