Challenges Faced by Indian Women's Football Team Ahead of AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026
Preparation Issues for the Indian Women's Football Team
The Indian women's football team encountered significant setbacks prior to their match against Vietnam in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026. Reports from Australia indicate that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) mistakenly sent ill-fitting match kits to the senior women's national squad. This situation led players to formally address their concerns to the federation. In a letter, they expressed that the arrival of unsuitable kits at such a critical time has negatively impacted their morale and disrupted their focus just days before the match. They emphasized the importance of professional standards, including well-fitted and appropriate uniforms, when representing India on an international platform.
Due to a size mismatch affecting 80% of the team, players had to procure playing kits locally. This incident is not an isolated one, as the women's team's preparations have faced scrutiny in the past. Initially, the team was expected to engage in 10-12 international friendlies and five to seven domestic matches before the tournament. However, a report from ESPN reveals that since qualifying, they have only participated in three international matches—one against Iran and two against Nepal in October—without securing a victory.
This marks the first time in 43 years that the Blue Tigresses are competing in the continent's premier tournament. Their first match is scheduled against Vietnam at the Perth Rectangular Stadium on March 4, followed by a clash with Japan on March 7 at the same venue. They will conclude the group stage with a match against Chinese Taipei at Western Sydney Stadium on March 10.
