Challenges Faced by Indian Pole Vaulters Highlight Sports Inequality
Heartbreaking Reality for Athletes
In a poignant moment, pole vaulters Dev Kumar Meena and Kuldeep Kumar were spotted using an e-rickshaw to transport their gear shortly after they set a new national record at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition in Ranchi. They achieved a remarkable height of 5.45m, surpassing the previous record of 5.41m. This incident starkly contrasts the financial rewards enjoyed by cricketers, who receive substantial salaries from the BCCI and lucrative sponsorships, while athletes in other sports struggle for basic amenities. Dev clinched the gold medal on countback, while Kuldeep secured silver, both qualifying for the Commonwealth Games. Their impressive performance garnered applause from the audience, yet they require much more support. Following the viral video of their transportation struggles, fans voiced their concerns regarding the treatment of these athletes.
Ongoing Transportation Issues for Athletes
Transportation Woes Continue To Haunt Indian Athletes
This incident is not isolated; Dev has previously faced challenges transporting his equipment. During last year's Federation Cup, he was unable to bring his gear because the airline refused to carry it, forcing his coach, Ghanshyam, to transport the poles separately by train. Additionally, Dev and fellow pole vaulters encountered difficulties when railway officials objected to the transport of fibreglass poles, despite having government clearance. A video showing the athletes pleading with railway authorities went viral, sparking outrage over the treatment of sports professionals. Despite these hurdles, Dev remains optimistic that achieving medals at both national and international levels will elevate the sport's profile and improve conditions for athletes. He stated, “A little bit, yes. But we have to do more to change that perception. Till the time Neeraj Chopra won Olympic gold in 2021, not many knew about the sport. Now the whole world knows it. His javelins face no problems. But we still may suffer. It is performances like these that might help us in our cause,” as reported by a local media outlet.
