Catalunya Pickleball Cup 2026 Launches in Lleida

The Catalunya Pickleball Cup 2026 is poised to showcase the sport's rapid growth in Spain and Europe, kicking off later this month in Lleida. This event marks the beginning of a new regional circuit aimed at broadening the sport's reach and attracting more participants throughout Catalonia. The tournament's inaugural round is scheduled for March 22 at Club Natació Lleida, featuring the first competition in the Open Amateur category.

This tournament is part of a larger initiative to enhance pickleball's development in Catalonia and boost player engagement, reflecting the sport's steady rise in popularity across Spain in recent years. The event will include a diverse program split into Open and Senior +50 categories, catering to players of all ages and skill levels.

Mike Hess, the founder of Pickleball Spain, recently shared insights on the establishment of the organization and its vision. He noted, "Spain is rapidly becoming a pickleball hub. Known as the 'Florida of Europe,' it attracts many European snowbirds during the winter, who come to enjoy the pleasant weather, beautiful coastlines, and islands, all perfect for outdoor activities like pickleball." He expressed his ambition to replicate the sport's success seen in the US and Canada, highlighting the similar demographics in Europe. Hess is also assisting other European nations in developing their pickleball scenes and hopes to organize a World Tournament soon, aiming to cultivate players who can compete at the highest levels against North American athletes.
