In that intense match, Wozniacki faced not just her opponent but also extreme physical challenges. She suffered from severe cramps that affected her entire body, forcing her to endure significant pain throughout the lengthy encounter.

Despite these difficulties, Wozniacki managed to secure a remarkable victory, winning in three sets with scores of 6–0, 6–7(3), 6–4, marking one of the most physically demanding matches she has ever played.

‘Crazy to Watch It Back’

A video recently went viral on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing Wozniacki struggling with cramps during the intense match, highlighting her determination to win against Zvonareva.

Wozniacki, reflecting on the match, revealed that she entered the contest with a left hamstring strain, which worsened due to the humid conditions, leading to severe cramps.

She tweeted, "This was me! Came in to the match with a left hamstring strain, overcompensated for it with the rest of the body, it was a long match in very humid conditions, and I ended up in a full body cramp, but somehow found a way to win the match! Crazy to watch it back!"

Calls for Change in Tennis Regulations

Despite battling through severe cramps and collapsing on the court, Wozniacki did not receive any medical assistance, as treatment for cramp-related issues was not allowed at that point in the match.

Sixteen years later, this match is still remembered as one of the most physically demanding in WTA history, prompting fans to advocate for better heat and medical regulations in tennis.

Reactions on X from fans and tennis enthusiasts have been strong, with many labeling the conditions as 'cruel' and calling for changes to the rules regarding heat stress. Others praised Wozniacki's resilience, describing the cramps as 'horrific' and questioning whether such extreme physical situations should be classified as injuries.
