Cabo Verde Makes History with FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Qualification
Cabo Verde's Historic Qualification Journey
Houston [US], June 27: Cabo Verde has made headlines by qualifying for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing their spot after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia. This remarkable achievement places them second in Group H, just behind the leaders, Spain.
Notably, Cabo Verde is the smallest nation to reach the knockout rounds in this global tournament's history.
As the third smallest country to compete in the World Cup finals, the Blue Sharks managed to progress by drawing all three of their group matches, as reported on the FIFA website.
This marks the first time since Chile in 1998 that a team has advanced from the group stage with three draws. Deroy Duarte from Cabo Verde was named Player of the Match for his exceptional performance.
Earlier in the tournament, Cabo Verde impressed by holding the European champions, Spain, to a draw and securing a 2-2 tie against Uruguay, which confirmed their qualification alongside Spain. Saudi Arabia finished last in the group with just two points.
The first half of the match was tightly contested, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities.
Jamiro Monteiro came close to scoring for Cabo Verde, breaking through Saudi defender Saud Abdulhamid and forcing a save from goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais with a low shot.
Monteiro threatened again early in the second half, but his shot lacked the necessary power and was easily saved by Al-Owais.
Kevin Pina also tested the Saudi goalkeeper with a curling left-footed attempt that just missed the target.
Al-Owais was called into action once more when Cabo Verde countered through Nuno da Costa, who set up Laros Duarte, but the keeper made a crucial save.
Da Costa later missed a late opportunity when Garry Rodrigues provided a low cut-back, but his side-footed shot went just wide of the post.
Despite these missed chances, Cabo Verde successfully secured their place in the Round of 32. Coach Bubista will now prepare his team for a knockout match against the defending champions, Argentina, in Miami on July 3.
