Sindhu and Shetty Advance with Ease

On day three of the BWF World Championships 2026 held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, former champion PV Sindhu and rising star Ayush Shetty showcased impressive performances, easily defeating their second-round opponents. Sindhu, who is seeded ninth, triumphed over Canada's Zhang Wen Yu with scores of 21-16, 21-17 in the women's singles. Meanwhile, Ayush Shetty required only 26 minutes to dispatch Sri Lanka's Dumindu Abeywickrama, winning 21-8, 21-10, thus moving on to the men's singles pre-quarterfinals, as reported by BAI Media.

In the upcoming round of 16, Sindhu will face off against third seed Wang Zi Yi from China, who earlier defeated Malaysia's Karuoathevan Letshanaa with a score of 21-16, 21-9. Ayush is set to compete against Indonesia's 11th seed Alwi Farhan, who advanced after a convincing victory over Finland's Joakim Oldorff, winning 21-12, 21-9.

Mixed Fortunes for Indian Players

While Sindhu and Ayush enjoyed success, it was a disappointing day for Lakshya Sen and Unnati Hood. Lakshya, seeded 14th, faced a tough challenge from 18-year-old Garret Tan of the USA, ultimately losing in a hard-fought match that lasted an hour and 13 minutes, with scores of 19-21, 21-19, 21-17. Unnati, making her world championships debut, was unable to convert two match points against 13th seed Michelle Li of Canada, losing 11-21, 21-9, 23-21.

Lakshya started strong, winning the first game against Tan, but the American player responded with powerful smashes. Despite a valiant effort in the second game, Lakshya could not secure the win in the deciding game, trailing 4-11 before narrowing the gap to 16-17, only to falter in the end.

Unnati came close to an upset, earning two match points against Li, but her attempts fell short, allowing Li to clinch the match with a decisive smash.
