Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the Verge of IPL Milestone Ahead of RCB vs CSK Clash
Bhuvneshwar Kumar Approaches Historic IPL Milestone
Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is poised to make history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) gear up to face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 11 of the 2026 season at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium this Sunday.
As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the 36-year-old needs just one more wicket to become the second bowler ever in IPL history, and the first fast bowler, to achieve the remarkable feat of 200 wickets. Currently, Yuzvendra Chahal holds the record as the only bowler to surpass the 200-wicket milestone, with a total of 224 wickets from 176 matches.
Evolution from Swing Specialist to Death-Over Ace
Initially recognized for his swing bowling and effectiveness during the powerplay, Bhuvneshwar has undergone significant evolution throughout his career. While he remains a formidable force with the new ball, his development into a reliable death-over bowler has added depth to his skill set. His arsenal now includes variations like the knuckleball and precise yorkers, making him a well-rounded T20 bowler.
Key Contributor to RCB's Previous Success
Bhuvneshwar played an essential role in RCB's title-winning journey last season. While Josh Hazlewood received much of the attention, Bhuvneshwar quietly excelled, securing 17 wickets in 14 matches. His performance in the death overs was particularly noteworthy, where he took seven wickets, including a crucial spell in the final against the Punjab Kings.
With Hazlewood unavailable at the start of the current season, Bhuvneshwar has emerged as RCB's leading bowler. He made a significant impact in the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, allowing only 31 runs in four overs, showcasing his skills in both the powerplay and death overs. Ahead of the CSK match, he has also impressed in training, challenging top batters with his mix of hard lengths, cutters, and yorkers.
A Glimpse into a Legendary IPL Career
Throughout his IPL journey, Bhuvneshwar has consistently been a top performer. He leads the powerplay wicket-takers with 80 wickets, boasting an impressive economy rate of 6.52. In the death overs, he has claimed 93 wickets, ranking just behind Dwayne Bravo.
His IPL career has seen various phases, from limited opportunities at RCB to a breakout with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he won consecutive Purple Caps in 2016 and 2017, followed by a decline and a strong resurgence in recent seasons.
Since 2023, he has regained his form, taking 45 wickets in 45 innings, effectively adapting to the rising run rates in T20 cricket.
As RCB prepares for a significant match against CSK, all eyes will be on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is just one wicket away from a historic achievement that could further solidify his status as one of the finest bowlers in IPL history.
