Bhaichung Bhutia Highlights Rising Stars for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Emerging Talents in Focus
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 11: Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has expressed his thoughts on the young players expected to make a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, identifying them as potential game-changers for the upcoming decade.
In a conversation with a news outlet, Bhutia acknowledged the remarkable achievements of these budding stars and the opportunities the tournament presents for them to showcase their skills on an international platform.
He remarked, "For Lamine Yamal, this will be his inaugural World Cup, and it will be fascinating to observe his performance, despite some recent injury setbacks. However, he is on the mend."
At just 18 years old, Yamal has already accumulated an impressive collection of accolades, including two La Liga titles, a UEFA Euro 2024 championship, and consecutive Kopa Trophies as the best under-21 player globally.
Bhutia also commended Erling Haaland's club performances and expressed excitement about his debut World Cup appearance.
The 25-year-old striker has an impressive trophy collection, including one European Golden Shoe, the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award for the 2022-23 season, and the Golden Boy award in 2020.
Haaland has also clinched the Premier League Golden Boot twice (2022-23, 2023-24) and the UEFA Champions League Golden Boot twice (2020-21, 2022-23), along with being named Premier League Player of the Season in 2022-23.
Bhutia stated, "Everyone is aware of Haaland's achievements at the club level. His first World Cup appearance is an opportunity to demonstrate his talent on the global stage, which I eagerly anticipate."
Regarding Kylian Mbappe, Bhutia noted that the French superstar has already established himself as one of the finest players of his generation, having won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reached the finals in the last tournament.
He commented, "Mbappe has proven himself to be exceptional, especially during the last World Cup, where he nearly single-handedly led France to victory."
Bhutia emphasized the aspirations of both Yamal and Haaland, who will be keen to make their mark in their first World Cup.
He added, "For Lamine Yamal and Haaland, this World Cup is a chance to prove themselves on the biggest stage, aiming to become top goal scorers, which will be a challenging feat."
Bhutia also pointed out potential underdog teams that could surprise fans at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, naming Brazil, Japan, and Ecuador as capable of making significant strides in the tournament.
He remarked that while Brazil has a rich history of World Cup success, they may enter this tournament as underdogs.
"Historically, Brazil has been synonymous with World Cup victories. However, as we approach this World Cup, they may not be viewed as favorites among the top contenders. I see Brazil as an underdog this time around," Bhutia stated.
He praised Japan for their consistent performances in qualifiers and friendlies, including notable victories against top teams like England.
"Japan has been outstanding throughout the qualifiers and friendlies, defeating teams like England in their own backyard. They are a team to watch," he added.
Bhutia expressed some reservations about Norway, citing the challenges of adapting to hot and humid conditions, despite having star striker Haaland in top form.
He explained, "While Norway has qualified for the first time, the climate will be a significant adjustment for them. They have talented players, including Haaland, but the weather may pose challenges."
Additionally, he identified Ecuador as a potential dark horse, emphasizing the importance of strong defensive play in knockout tournaments.
"Ecuador could surprise many, as solid defense is crucial in knockout stages. A well-organized defense can lead to unexpected victories, even against the best teams," Bhutia concluded.
