The Legacy of Football Icons

Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has shared his thoughts on the enduring legacy of football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite nearing the end of their remarkable careers, both players are expected to be central figures in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This edition of the tournament will feature an unprecedented number of participants, with 1,248 players from 48 nations set to compete, beginning June 12 (Indian Standard Time).

Messi and Ronaldo, who have been at the forefront of global football for nearly twenty years, will make their historic sixth World Cup appearance.

The Argentine forward has achieved more European Golden Boots than Ronaldo, with Messi holding six awards compared to Ronaldo's four.

Additionally, Messi has won the Ballon d'Or eight times, while Ronaldo has secured it five times, with the two dominating the awards scene for over a decade, amassing a total of 13 wins between 2008 and 2023.

In a conversation about their rivalry and its influence on the tournament, Bhutia expressed his anticipation for a potential clash between the two stars in the knockout stages.

He remarked, 'We could witness Messi and Ronaldo in either the quarterfinals or semifinals, which would be an exciting match. However, the buzz around them isn't as intense as it was four or eight years ago, even though they still capture attention this World Cup.'

Reflecting on Messi's incredible journey with Argentina, Bhutia noted that the 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar marked a turning point for the player, leading to a remarkable period of success for La Albiceleste, which also includes two Copa America titles.

'Messi has been exceptional with Argentina, especially after their Copa America win. Following that, they clinched the last World Cup and another Copa America, so he is on a winning streak now,' Bhutia added.

Shifting focus to Ronaldo, who is the all-time leading scorer in men's football, Bhutia highlighted the strong support around him, expressing hope that the 41-year-old could finally secure the World Cup trophy before retiring.

'For Cristiano, this could be his last World Cup, and with a strong squad, it would be fantastic to see him win and retire at the top,' Bhutia commented.

Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals in men's international football, with over 140 goals for Portugal in more than 220 matches. His overall career tally exceeds 970 official goals across clubs like Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr, and the national team.

Bhutia emphasized that the motivation for the Portuguese squad would be to win the title for Ronaldo.

'The players will want him to win and retire with a title. They will play for both Messi and Ronaldo,' he stated.

When asked what distinguishes these two icons from their contemporaries, Bhutia replied, 'Their records, professionalism, and attitude set them apart. They are role models for aspiring footballers worldwide, including young players in India. It's remarkable to witness such talent in our generation.'

He concluded, 'Both have achieved incredible success, especially Ronaldo, who has excelled in every league he's played in. Even in their 40s, they continue to represent their countries at the World Cup, showcasing their dominance in football for the past two decades.'
