Controversy Surrounding M. Chinnaswamy Stadium

As the IPL 2026 approaches, Bengaluru's renowned M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has found itself in the spotlight once again. Initially, there were concerns regarding the scheduling of matches, and now a new controversy has emerged, putting the stadium's role in hosting the IPL 2026 final at risk if not resolved promptly.

Ticket Controversy Complicates Situation

Recent reports indicate that a dispute over MLA tickets in Bengaluru has complicated matters. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to officially announce the venues for the playoffs and final, but traditionally, these matches are held at the home grounds of the previous season's finalists. This suggests that the IPL 2026 playoffs may take place in Punjab and Karnataka, as the last final was contested between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, where RCB clinched their first title. However, reports suggest that if the ticket controversy persists, the BCCI may consider relocating the final to another city.

Details of the Controversy

The controversy began ahead of the IPL 2026 opening match between RCB and SRH. Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar proposed that each MLA should receive at least five IPL tickets, arguing that public representatives are VIPs and should not have to queue for tickets. Following this, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that MLAs and MPs would receive three tickets each for RCB matches. This decision led to allegations of ticket misuse. However, Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara dismissed these claims, stating that tickets are booked online and cannot be misused. He clarified that these tickets are non-transferable and are typically used by the legislators or their family members.

RCB's Strong Performance Continues

Despite the off-field controversies, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been performing exceptionally well on the field. The team has won 6 out of 9 matches, securing 12 points and currently sitting in second place on the points table, just behind Punjab Kings. RCB's next match is scheduled against Lucknow Super Giants on May 7 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
